We are busy in first grade!

We have just finished our Writing for Readers unit in writing. We hope you enjoyed the stories that were sent home! We are beginning a new unit...Realistic Fiction! Our Realistic Fiction stories will have characters that we create. These characters will face real life problems and come up with solutions. We will study several mentor texts to help us develop our stories.

In reading, we are studying characters. In particular, we have been looking at the Gingerbread Man and learning all we can about him. We are studying character’s actions and words to think deeply about the kinds of characters they are. We will be using post-it notes to jot down ideas, predictions, noticings and wonderings about the characters in our books.

In math, we are moving into learning about measuring.  Students will learn the rules for measuring and use non-standard units for measuring length and height.  Students will also be exploring combinations to 10, adding 10 more and 10 less, and adding 3 digit numbers.  Graphing will also be reviewed using bar graphs, tally graphs as well as comparing data collected on the graphs.  After that, students will move into learning about place value.  Numbers will be compared using greater than, less than and equal to symbols.  Students will learn to extending number patterns making a number scroll.  Lastly, students will be adding 2-digit numbers and comparing the larger numbers.

Social Studies

We will be learning about families and our place in the community. Students will share about their holidays and learn about the holidays celebrated by our classmates. We will become aware of other cultures traditions.

We will be looking at maps and learning about a compass rose. We will learn about maps of our neighborhood, our town and state. Students will learn about their place on the map
